French Style English Flintlock Northwest Trade Musket, .71 cal smoothbore, mfg. circa first quarter 19th century. This English manufactured military musket is made in the style of a French Charleville for trade amongst the natives of Canada who would have been familiar with the French style of the era. The Birmingham proofed barrel measures 42 7/8" long and is struck “14” to indicate the slightly undersized 14 bore ball size (.69 cal) it is intended to fire. The lock is stamped “LONDON” and remains in it's original unaltered flintlock form with all original components. Overall the metal has a smooth dark gray/brown patina. The stock is in great shape overall with no cracks and has an attractive dark cherry color with a blackened patina forming.
Iron buttplate, sideplate, and screw fastened barrel bands with brass blade front sight. Original ramrod and sling swivels. The action is remarkably strong and crisp and functions perfectly. Frizzen tightly snaps shut and springs forward. Untouched bore is dirty with some apparent milling roughness toward the muzzle but appears sound overall and should clean up quite well if desired. A great looking original flintlock musket in very fine condition.
