The Dutch 1871/88 Beaumont-Vitali is a fascinating and rare example of 19th-century European military innovation. Originally introduced in 1871 as a single-shot bolt-action rifle, the Beaumont was one of the earliest European rifles designed specifically for metallic cartridges. In 1888, the rifle was updated with the addition of a 4-round Vitali box magazine system—one of the earliest magazine conversions applied to a single-shot rifle—bringing the Beaumont-Vitali into line with the repeating rifles of the era. This particular example was manufactured in 1874 and later arsenal-upgraded in 1890, reflecting its extended service life during a pivotal time in firearms development. This rifle retains a compelling antique appearance with about 5% of its original finish, now largely replaced by a mix of brown patina and light rust across the metal surfaces. The bore is heavily eroded with pitting and missing rifling segments, but still recognizable—a common condition for black powder rifles of this age. The bolt is matched to the receiver, which is a nice touch for collectors, and the action remains functional. The stock shows evidence of use and a refinish, with dents, scratches, and a cut-down forend but no major cracks. The faded inscription “P. STEVENS MAGISTRATE” and other Dutch arsenal markings add historic and collectible appeal.
For collectors of obscure European military rifles or those interested in transitional black powder-to-smokeless technology, the Beaumont-Vitali offers a rare glimpse into Dutch military development. As an antique, it is exempt from modern firearm regulations, making it accessible to collectors across the world.
