Documented Model 1873 Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Rare Factory Ivory Grips, .45 Cal, mfg. 1885 with 5 ½" barrel. This Colt is a rare configuration with a classic cowboy look!
Overall the gun has a smooth brown/gray patina with some small hints of bluing in protected areas. Original one-piece ivory grips feature a carved steer head on the right side and fit perfect with only very minor shrinkage/wear along the backstrap. They show heavy wear with a large worn-over chip at the lower front corner on the right side with a small thin chip at the rear, and an old worn chip at the upper left corner on the left side. In spite of this the gun has a really great feel in hand and the ivory has a wonderful yellowed color with natural grain checking. There is a thin notch cut around the grips and over the gripstraps apparently for a lanyard of some kind probably to keep from loosing the gun on horseback. Clear original barrel address, three-line patent dates, “45 CAL” marked triggerguard, and matching serial number “113860” stamped on the frame, triggerguard, and backstrap. A Colt factory inspector's mark “G” is additionally stamped on the gripstraps which is commonly encountered on guns manufactured between 1881-1885.
Original hammer, trigger, screws, cylinder pin, ejector rod with brass spring, and blade front sight. The action is smooth and crisp and functions perfectly with four clicks. Cylinder locks up on time with typical slight play. Great bore with clean sharp rifling and light blackpowder frosting. A real-deal Wild West cowboy's Colt .45 with a fantastic look and feel! *
