Up for sale is a Harrington and Richardson Automatic Ejecting Model Revolver –
Second Variation, designed Second Variation, designed for the obsolete .32 H&R black powder cartridge. Manufactured
sometime between 1890 and 1892, references state that the second variation is identified by the
presentation of the patent information on the top of the barrel. The second variation has only one
patent and the year is marked in full (1887). On this revolver it is very difficult to make out this
detail with the naked eye, but it is clearly visible using a microscope. A photo taken through a
stereo microscope is included to support this identification.
References also state that the absence of a caliber marking on the left side of the barrel indicates
the revolver was designed for use with black powder only. There is no caliber marking on this
piece presumably confirming black powder use only.
The double action, six shot mechanism functions as designed
The nickel plating has some flaking and age related patina, but it remains in relatively
good condition considering this revolver is over 130 years old. The bore on the 3 1/8 inch barrel
looks like the bore on most black powder antiques.
It is a very nice example of American firearms history and manufacturing and would display
well in any collection. It is sure to increase in value over time.
