Remington Rider Pocket Revolver that has been converted to use .32
caliber rimfire cartridges. It is a small, easy to conceal, double action revolver designed by
Joseph Rider that provided a good compromise between bullet size and recoil. In its day it
offered the added benefit of using the most current ammunition technology available at the time.
It nicely met the need for concealable personal protection.
The capping groove in the shield indicates this revolver began life as a percussion revolver that
was manufactured between 1863 and 1870. Sometime afterwards it was converted to use .32
caliber rimfire cartridges. References state that Remington “took many of them in” and
converted them at the factory. This appears to be one of those guns. It retains most of its
original nickel finish which is a bit more rare and more desirable to collectors. The double
action trigger pull is very stout but functions as it should. Although the bore in the 2 1/2 inch
barrel has pitting it still retains a good deal of rifling. The chambers in the cylinder are
surprisingly clean for a revolver that is roughly 150 years old.
The underside of the barrel is marked with serial number 7169. The same number can be found
on the frame on the inside top of the trigger guard. The gutta percha grips are in amazing
condition and each scale is marked on the inside with the number 69, indicating they are original
to the barrel and frame. The cylinder and backplate both bear the number 313.
The top of the barrel is marked in two lines. The top line is marked “MANUFACTURED BY
REMINGTONS ILION. N.Y”. which appears over the second line which reads “RIDERS. PT.
AUG. 17. 1858. MAY 3. 1859”
It is in great condition and
sure to increase in value over time.
