This Belgian-made folding trigger percussion pistol, commonly referred to as a muff gun, is a fascinating relic from the mid-19th century. Likely produced in the 1850s.
Chambered in .44 caliber, this example is on the larger side for a muff pistol, indicating it may have been intended for serious use rather than mere deterrence. The folding trigger design was a practical innovation of the time, minimizing snags during draw and storage. Although the pistol shows significant age-related wear, including a completely patinated finish and mechanical issues with the hammer and sear, it still retains the essence of its period craftsmanship. The bore has visible rifling with light to moderate erosion and scattered pitting, which is to be expected from an unlined black powder barrel of this age. The checkered wood grip with brass trapdoor adds a touch of elegance and utility, despite some missing wood and visible pressure dents. The markings, while faded, still offer insight into its Belgian origin and construction quality.
Collectors of antique arms will appreciate this pistol for its historical value and unique design.
