Fine Cased Engraved Green, Otley, Leeds, England Percussion Double Barrel Shotgun, 12 GA, mfg. circa 1840's/1850's. This is a beautiful early English sporting gun complete in it's original velvet lined wood case. The Birmingham proofed Damascus barrels measure 29 7/8" long fitted with an iron bead front sight. The upper rib is inscribed “OTLEY”. The gun is engraved throughout with fine broad scrollwork with both locks inscribed “GREEN”. The barrels have a smooth plum patina with a few scattered spots of light pitting toward the muzzles and faint twist pattern visible while the locks and furniture show a silvery/gray color drifting to brown. Nicely figured stock features a checkered English straight grip and retains 80% glossy original finish with rich color and a pleasing untouched appearance. Very small old repaired compression chip at the toe with a tight old ¾" crack above the left lock and some very minor nicks along some edges. Engraved iron buttplate, triggerguard, and forend tip with nickel silver wedge escutcheons. Both actions are very firm, smooth, and crisp and function perfectly. Right hammer is a closely matched old replacement and the screw has sheared off flush with the tumbler so as it sits the hammer will loosely fall off. Left hammer has typical moderate play. Original nipples are flattened from dry firing. Original working life wood ram rod has an old repaired break at it's center. Barrels appear sound with good ribs and no dents. Untouched bores appear fair with moderate blackpowder frosting and fine pitting throughout. Original wood case measures 32 ½" x 9 ¾" x 3" and remains in good sound condition with attractive untouched original finish and velvet lined partitions. One locking hook on the front is missing. Cleaning rod, wad cutter, wads, and percussion caps included as pictured. A lovely old double gun that displays wonderfully and could make a good shooter if desired with a little effort.
