Fine Civil War Remington Model 1862 Zouave Rifle & Orig Bayonet c. 1863

This is an antique fine condition and all original Civil War US Model 1862 Contract Rifle, also known as the Zouave Rifle, that was manufactured by Remington in 1863. This rifle also comes with the equally rare Model 1862 Saber Bayonet and Scabbard, which was based on the earlier Model 1855 Saber Bayonet. Only 10,000 were delivered during the war.

As could be expected, the configuration of the Remington Model 1862 Rifle bears a resemblance to the earlier Model 1841 Rifle.
The original Barrel measures 33 1/8” long has 2” breech side flats and it has a convex-crowned muzzle. The Barrel still retains considerable original blued finish throughout. There is a serif “L” inspection stamp on the right flat. The Nipple Bolster has a straight bottom profile with a flash shield, and it has a flat outer face. The nipple is in very good condition, and it is clear to the breech. The top of the barrel has the “1863” date. There is also a serif “V/P/eagle head” stamp on the top, left of the barrel. On the left barrel flat is the word “STEEL,” as specified in the original contract next to the inspection letters “H.S.L.,” which are the initials of Homer S. Lathe, who was a civilian sub-inspector of contract arms. He is known to have inspected Remington, Sharps, and Colt firearms during the Civil War. The original breech plug is present, and the Breech Plug Tang Screw has a slightly marred slot.

The original Stock is in very good condition and retains its original oil finish. Both original barrel band springs are present, and both retain the majority of their original blued finish.

This rifle also comes with the scarce and fine condition Model 1862 Saber Bayonet with its original scabbard.

This rifle comes with a correct, but reproduction black leather sling. This Remington Model 1862 “Zouave” Rifle is fully functional and remains in firing condition.
