Offered here is a classic example of Smith & Wesson's .38 Safety Hammerless “New Departure” revolver — Third Model, made in 1892 and classified as an antique. Chambered in .38 S&W with a 3.25" barrel, this top-break revolver was ahead of its time with its internal hammer design and reliable double action only operation.

This particular example retains approximately 80% of its original nickel finish, with some typical flaking and isolated areas of surface corrosion, most notably near the cylinder and along the frame. The grips are non-original pearl replacements, offering a period-correct aesthetic but not factory-issued.

Mechanically, this revolver functions exactly as it should. The action is smooth, it locks up tightly, the ejector star operates correctly, and all serial numbers are matching. The bore is a bit frosted with light wear, and the chambers remain bright.

This example predates the common S&W frame markings and is a great representation of an early transitional model from the 19th century.
