We are so proud to offer this fine example of Marlin's first side eject rifle, the model 1889. This one is decked out in deluxe form, with a checkered pistol grip stock made of fine walnut. Made in the year of our Lord 1890, she is in very good condition for being 134 years old. She has received very good care, as all the markings are sharp and clear. The action is crisp and smooth, and works as designed, including the half cock safety. The bore of the longer than standard 26 inch octagonal barrel is quite good, with plenty of shine and strong rifling. A few patches of light pitting are the only detraction. . She is chambered in 32-20 WCF.
The walnut, is also in very good condition. Only a few light handling marks can be found. The serial number, 35602, can be found on the receiver, tang, stock, and butt plate. The fine folks at the Cody Museum verified the original specififications of this rifle in a Marlin factory letter. It is interesting to note that the 1889 is the only Marlin to have a lever retainer built into the frame. Only about 55 thousand were produced, and much fewer were made in deluxe form.
Compare that to the Winchester 1894, which sold over 6 millions copies, alone. The Marlin 1889 has really gained in value, even when compared to other Marlin models. The plainest rifle with lots of use typically still brings thousands, telling me that it is a favorite among collectors. If you have been looking for the right Marlin 1889 to collect or for investment, but want the added clout of a Cody lettered deluxe special order, then look no further. Good luck, gentlemen!
