This one is exceedingly rare in that it is a factory special order short rifle with a 24 inch octagonal barrel and a single set trigger. It is hard to believe she is 140 years old. It looks like we set the time machine for 1881.
The blue is strong and deep, the walnut fits very well, the stampings are clear, the action crisp, and the bore has plenty of shine and strong rifling. Chambered in the then potent 45-60 WCF, she was ready for just about any big game animal or home defense. The 1876 marked rear sight is also in great shape. The icing on the cake is that the 4 piece cleaning rod is present, for once. The 1876 was the bigger framed version of the 1873, and had a relatively short run. That, combined with the fact that it was the last true Winchester design, has made these big rifles highly sought after and extremely valuable. While the standard models with a 28 inch barrel fetch a pretty penny, any special order gun commands much higher prices. Only 401 were made with a 24 inch barrel and chambered in 45-60. If you have been looking for the right '76 to collect, for investment, or for that classy hunt, but want the added clout of a factory short rifle, then look no further.
