Very scarce high condition Spencer Model 1886 12ga slide action repeating shotgun manufactured in 1886. Relatively unchanged from the 1884 excepting the 1882 patent date marking on top of the barrel in common with the Models 1887 and 1890. This one is serial 1945, stamped in the bottom of the barrel as is correct – it wasn't until later (I think the Bannerman era with the 1896 & 1900) that they were marked on the rear tang of the trigger guard. Most of these were hard used and in rough condition – this is the nicest 1886 I've handled. Clearly visible pattern along the full 32” length of the Damascus barrel. A good deal of original blue still present on the receiver. Intact gutta percha fore end and wood buttstock – wood looks like it was likely refinished. Bore appears free from bulges and serious issues, with heavy frosting/fouling throughout as would be expected. Mechanical function seems to be in good order. All in all a top shelf Spencer 1886 shotgun that would be very difficult to upgrade. Eclipsed by the Winchester 1893 and subsequent 97, the Spencer was nonetheless a revolutionary step in shotgun development and a necessary piece for inclusion in an advanced 19th century arms collection.
Antique, nolicence required as long as you are not in a jurisdiction which prohibits direct shipping of pre-1899 arms to unlicensed collectors.
