This is a great example of the classic U.S. Springfield Armory "Trapdoor" rifle in the original caliber of .45-70. The breechblock is marked U.S. MODEL 1873. The serial number is 168710, and it has the *(star) mark, for which no correct information has ever been found out about. The stock cartouche is marked 1881, as this was built in December 1881. The rifle features a very nice, unsanded stock with great cartouches. The Inspector's initials are SWP, which belong to Samuel W. Porter, who was the Master Armorer and Chief Inspector of Springfield Armory from September 15, 1879, to June 18, 1894. The firing proof P in a circle under the wrist of the stock indicates that the rifle passed all of its overpressure proof testing. Additional marks include inspector's and proof marks around the breech end of the barrel: a capital A on top, a V over a P, over an eagle’s head, over another P, on the left side, just above the stock. The butt plate is marked U.S., and both barrel bands are "U" marked. The lock is marked with an eagle and U.S. SPRINGFIELD 1873, manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield, Massachusetts. The rear sight is the correct version that is marked R for rifle (carbine sights are marked C for carbine). The ramrod is the correct M1873 rod.
The rifle is in very good condition with great amounts of the original finish remaining, and it looks as if it has come right out of very long-term storage. The bore and rifling are excellent and shiny in the original length (32 5/8") barrel. Absolutely amazing for a 144-year-old weapon!
There are a few handling and wear marks on the rifle, as would be expected on a 144-year-old weapon.
This will make an excellent collectible and shooter. The Trapdoor Springfield Rifle was used for many years in the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, and the Boxer Rebellion.
