This Remington 1903 being is serial number 3002282, made during the first month of Remington production. When it was built, the 1903 was given dark blue/black parkerized finish and an “RA 10-41” marked barrel with an Ordnance Department “Flaming Bomb”. It then received a “S” type “straight” stock with “grasping grooves”with an inspection stamp reading “RA RLB” from Colonel Roy L. Bowlin. After test firing a “Circle P” stamp was added behind the trigger guard.
Today, eighty-four years later, the “RA 10-41” marked barrel and the straight stock are still in place. Only the barrel, magazine cut-off lever, rear sight and the rear sling attachment still have the blue/black original finish. All of the other metal components now wear a greenish gray parkerized finish and there is a stamp on the stock reading “BA-WL”. The “BA-WL” confirms that the 1903 was reworked at the Benicia Arsenal and inspected by William Lewis.
Overall considering its' age and use, the 1903 is in very good condition. The bore is shinny and bright with strong rifling and shows almost no ware. There is some thinning of the finish on the trigger guard and the magazine floor plate, but there is no pitting, rust or corrosion.
The actions cycles smoothly, locks up tight and the trigger pull is light and crisp. The safety and magazine cut-off work as designed and cartridges feed correctly.
