Here is Type 99 Japanese Infantry Rifle from WW II that has survived in exceptional condition. The “Mum” has not been ground, there are no Import Marks and all of the early war features are in place suggesting that the Type 99 was a “Vet Bring Back”.
The Type 99 is in overall excellent condition. Apparently, it saw only limited use before being captured. The stock and handguard are almost “as issued”. There are a few small handling marks with no chips or cracks. The barrel, receiver, dust cover, butt plate and nose cap/bayonet mount retain about 98% of their original finish with no rust or corrosion. There is some significant thinning of the finish on the receiver back strap and in front of the magazine well. The thinning is exactly where a Japanese soldier would have gripped the rifle with his sweaty hands.
With the chrome lining in place, the bore is bright and shiny with sharp rifling. The rifle should shoot just as it did when it left the arsenal over eighty years ago. The action is smooth, feeds correctly, locks up tightly and everything works as designed.
Only the receiver and bolt group are numbered. The bolt handle, firing pin and dust cover are numbered “57”, seven away from the last two digits of the receiver SN 60850.
This Type 99, with the full “Mum”, all of the early features and the excellent condition would be a great addition to any WW II collection. My records show that I bought it over thirty years ago and it needs to be passed to someone who appreciates it.
