This is a really nice Colt 1849 Pocket Model Serial Number: 192019 Year of Manufacture: 1861 Caliber: .31 Action Type: 5-Shot, Single Action Percussion Revolver Markings: The top of the barrel is the one line address “ADDRESS COL SAML (small “L”) COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA”. The left side of the frame is marked “COLTS / PATENT". The left of the trigger guard is marked "D". The serial numbers on bottom of the barrel assembly, bottom of the frame, bottom of the trigger guard and bottom of the backstrap, the wedge, cylinder arbor as well as cylinder are all matching numbers. The roll-engraved stagecoach scene on cylinder is actually in quite decent condition and probably 90% visible. Barrel Length: 6”, Octagonal with about the nicest bore you've ever seen. Strong and mirror bright! I was shocked when I saw it! Sights / Optics: The front sight is standard conical brass bead at the muzzle, the rear sight was a "V" notch in the hammer. Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is a one-piece smooth walnut. Left panel has a small bruise and a tiny chip at front toe. Left panel shows a matching tiny chip at the front toe portion if the grip and a small chip on bottom edge. There are also numerous small dings on the very bottom as you can see in pics. They do retain approx. 70% of their original finish and do show handling wear and or thinning from use. Finish: Grey patina with some peppery pitting on barrel and cylinder. Frame and lever assembly has approx. 10% case colors in protected areas. Brass backstrap and triggerguard is a mellow patina on the brass with approx 10-20% of the original silverplate remaining at top of backstrap as well as protected areas in and around triggerguard. Screw heads are all in excellent condition. Mechanics: Nice and crisp and functions properly. The feel of the action and superb bore condition indicates to me that this was carried more than it was actually fired. This is as found from a MA estate and has not been disassembled etc. other than to pull the wedge and remove barrel and cylinder for inspection. The barrel has no play to the frame. The trigger is crisp. These little revolvers were popular as a defense weapon, many thousands were sold in Western America to pioneer families. Soldiers appreciated the compact little pistols, and photographs of Civil War troops frequently show a sprinkling of the Model 1849 tucked into belts or in holsters.” This 1849 was made in 1861 in the beginnings of the Civil War and no telling what stories is has in it's history. Nice addition to any collection of early Colt revolvers or Civil War collection.
