This is antique German made “Foraging Shotgun” made during the percussion era (1830-1880). It was made by a gun-maker in Gera which is in the German state of Thuringia.
This “Sevfert” or Gera made foraging shotgun features:
(1) Ornate “PIX” trigger guard made of ebony. Guard features full finger grip and has checkered bottom. The guard has a perfect fit to the stock .
(2) Barrel is 36” long with tapering flat rib “filed” onto the barrels top. Front sight is a 5/8” low brass style.
(3) Stock is black walnut and has a “Perch belly” arch on the bottom. It runs full length and has a “Bavarian” style RH cheek.
(4) The stock has a curved steel butt and a brass tip on the front.
(5) There are three blued steel ramrod pipe fittings. The ramrod appears to be original with a steel ramming tip on its outside end.
(6) The lock & hammer are typical German style for the period. This is a two position lock with a single trigger. There is a rotating safety on the side plate.
(7) The side plate is stamped” A SEVFERT A GERA”.
(8) There is an original set of sling swivels on the stock.
(9) This gun weighs in at an incredible 5.75 pounds. It has balance at 6” in front of the action.
The condition of this gun is very good.
The inside barrel is very clean and very well maintained.
