Up for your consideration is a very nice Proof Marked 16th-17th Century Long Handled Battle AX. These were the types used by armored men on horseback with the long handle not only giving it additional reach but also acting as a force multiplier packing a much bigger punch than a shorter handled Ax especially on horseback. The shape of the blade also served a purpose as it was used to hook armor in an attempt to pull the enemy off of his horse.
The Ax head is in very good condition given its age and could still be used today. The bottom of the haft has a pronounced palm swell as is correct for a long handled battle ax and appears to have remnants of bees wax and old leather that has hardened to the bottom of the haft. Bees wax was known to be used at that time for added grip or for helping the leather wrap to better help set tightly on the haft.
There is a musuem inventory number stamped into the haft as well. This is a very nice piece that would be sure to impress at historical events, battle reanactments, museums, or your personal collection.
Shipping will be a fixed £15.
