U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1872 ROLLING-BLOCK U.S. ARMY RIFLE MANUFACTURED IN 1871-72 BY SPRINGFIELD ARMORY USING THE DESIGN ORIGINATED BY REMINGTON ARMS COMPANY UNDER A ROYALTY AGREEMENT. THIS RIFLE IS DATED 1872. BARREL BANDS ARE MARKED WITH "U" AS STANDARD WITH SPRINGFIELD ARMORY PRODUCED WEAPONS. THERE WERE ~10,000 MANUFACTURED U.S. ARMY ROLLING-BLOCK RIFLES. 36 INCH FULL ROUND BARREL WITH A VERY GOOD BORE. IT HAS STRONG RIFLING AND SOME LIGHT PITTING THAT SHOULD CLEAN UP. BARREL NEEDS A GOOD CLEANING. I JUST RAN A CLOTH THROUGH THE BARREL TO CLEAN UP THE DUST. IT IS SECURED BY TWO BARREL BANDS. HAS PLAIN WALNUT TWO-PIECE STOCK. RECEIVER MARKED "U.S. SPRINGFIELD 1872" WITH EAGLE ON RIGHT SIDE AND "MODEL 1871" ON LEFT SIDE. THERE IS NO BARREL ADDRESS OR SERIAL NUMBER. THIS IS A RELATIVELY SCARCE SPRINGFIELD MILITARY RIFLE. MILITARY CARTOUCHE (ESA) ON LEFT SIDE OF STOCK. IT STANDS FOR INSPECTOR ERSKINE.S. ALLIN. COMES WITH ORIGINAL CLEANING ROD.
