Up for sale is an antique US Springfield Model 1816 flintlock rifled musket converted to percussion in about 69 caliber. Rifled barrel measures 42" to the back of the breech/front of the upper tang with a marginally bright, frosted bore with moderate pitting and visible rifling. Metal surfaces are mostly dark brown patina with patches of gray along with scattered handling marks, high edge wear and a mix of pinprick to heavy pitting across the surface with notably heavy pitting ahead of the front band. Smooth wood stock is dark from age and shows numerous small handling marks, shallow bruises, a designed scratched on the left side of the butt. Musket only has the base of the front sight and no rear sight is present. Top rear of the barrel shows an “Eagle Head” proof along with a few others and the upper tang still has a clear 1823 date. Lock shows a worn “Eagle/US” ahead of the hammer and “Spring/field/1823” behind. Pan area has a brass plug filling the area from the conversion with a nipple above that. Hammer holds at half and full cock and the spring feels fairly strong. Included with the musket is a steel ramrod with a button shaped tip.
